Overview

This online training is for anyone serving afterschool. When school age children return to school, you too are starting a new year with the children in your care. Planning a predictable, yet flexible schedule is a must. Introducing and practicing routines, along with setting rules and expectations needs to happen now if you want your program to run smoothly. This will help your year be successful with children’s safety, positive interactions and behaviors being the top priority. This training will provide you with the information needed to accomplish all these things to make the most of your new year with your afterschool children.

Objective

4.2 a. Plans, implements, and adapts a supportive learning environment that promotes children’s safety, positive interactions, and behaviors
4.2 b. Designs schedules that are predictable but flexible
4.2 d. Makes sure expectations for routines and tasks are clear and purposeful for all children
4.2 e. Teaches the steps involved in routines and tasks (i.e., repeats directions, provides visual support while giving directions, uses visual and/or verbal prompts to help children follow through when necessary)
4.2 g. Uses a variety of strategies to engage and maintain children’s attention and active participation

Additional Information

Participants will be able to design a schedule that is predictable but flexible.
Participants will plan a supportive environment that promotes children’s safety, positive interactions and behaviors.
Participants will understand the importance of practicing and keeping routines.
Participants will use a variety of strategies to engage and maintain children's attention and active participation.
