Overview
This will be a face-to-face facilitated discussion with several members of our caregiver community. The objective of this training is to share the parent perspective of raising children with ASD to early childhood educators. Topics will include challenges, successes, relationships with schools and other community agencies.
Objective
2.1 Respects families and is responsive to language, culture, family characteristics, needs, concerns, and priorities
2.1 b. Respects families as the most important influence and decision-makers in a child’s life
2.1 d. Recognizes and acknowledges that culture, language, socioeconomic factors, support systems, and special needs may influence how families nurture their children
2.1 i. Recognizes the benefits of inclusion for children, families, early childhood professionals, and communities
2.1 j. Responds sensitively to families’ concerns, ways of coping, and child-rearing practices
2.1 l. Engages in respectful, goal-oriented partnerships with families to promote parent-child relationships and family well-being
2.2 Communicates regularly, respectfully, and effectively with families
2.2 b. Values families and welcomes them into the classroom, program, or home setting
2.2 f. Engages families in planning curriculum and activities, evaluating program outcomes, and planning transitions
2.2 h. Ensures services meet the individual needs and strengths of each family
2.3 Provides families with opportunities to learn and develop skills to help children achieve desired outcomes within the program, at home, and in the community
2.3 a. Engages families in a variety of meaningful opportunities to influence their child’s care and education
2.3 g. Implements strength-based, family-centered practices that engage families in meaningful decision-making opportunities
2.4 Helps connect families with needed resources and services
2.4 c. Supports and encourages families to identify and use a network of formal and informal supports (i.e., neighborhood groups, faith/spiritual communities, civic organizations, parent support groups)
2.4 f. Advocates for needed services and resources for families
2.4 g. Develops and maintains relationships with other professionals in related fields
6.6 Advocates for children, families, and the early childhood profession
6.6 e. Promotes acceptance of individuals with disabilities and special needs as valued and contributing family and community members
6.6 g. Acts as a resource and advocates for community awareness of the current research and best practices impacting children and families
6.6 j. Uses experiences and knowledge to inform and influence others about the needs of all children, families, and the profession
6.7 Collaborates among agencies
6.7 b. Understands that children are best served through collaborations that impact children and families
6.7 c. Communicates the value of collaborative relationships with others
6.7 f. Participates on collaborative teams and uses information exchanged to improve practice
